Participated in Watercnain project partners meeting in Turku, Finland

Our researchers Kristina Tihomirova, Linda Mezule, Kamila Gruskevica and Viktorija Denisova participated in Watercnain project partners meeting in Turku, Finland. They also visited pilot sites and Wastewater Treatment Plant Kakola. Great thanks to our Finnish partners for Turku University of Applied Sciences organizing the meeting.

On 5th of September our Water Research Laboratory representatives went to Braunschweig to meet and discuss with our partners the latest news and events in the POMECEA project.

Project «Assessment of Biogas Production Risks in the Baltic Sea Region»

From 30th August to 31st August project «Assessment of Biogas Production Risks in the Baltic Sea Region from the Perspective of Management of Nutrient Matter» meeting took place in Riga. The project is attended by 7 partners – Aalto University (Finland), Gdansk Technical University (Poland), Chalmers Technical University (Sweden), Estonian Biogas Association, The University of Aarhus (Denmark), the Riga Technical University and the John Nurminen Foundation. The project aim is to reduce the risk of leakage of nutrients from the biogas production process in the Baltic Sea Region and a number of discharges from existing biogas equipment. Riga Technical University Water Research Laboratory is project coordinator.

WRL team joined meeting with representatives from Institute of Food Safety

On 24th of August WRL team joined meeting with representatives from the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment «BIOR», Health Inspectorate and Ministry of Agriculture. The meeting was devoted to the project related to the risk assessment and water safety plan approach introduction in Latvia. World Health Organisation recommendations on that topic will be introduced in Latvia at the end of 2017.

Institute for Environmental Solutions

From 24th August to 2nd September Institute for Environmental Solutions (http://www.videsinstituts.lv) was hosting the first international summer school «Research and management of lake ecosystems» on lake ecology and management in Latvia (http://www.videsinstituts.lv/en/summer-school-on-lake-ecology/about-summer-school). Under the leadership of an international team of teachers, summer school participants had the opportunity to learn practical skills in lake surveys, and, in cooperation with business people, local people and local authorities, to develop recommendations for the management of the lake Ungurs. On August 30 our team’s leading researcher Kristīna Tihomirova, Linda Mežule and Vinda Ltd (http://www.vinda.lv/pak.php) representatives participated in summer school activities within WATERCHAIN project framework. During the day students had the opportunity to visit water and wastewater treatment plants and listened to a lecture on water and wastewater microbiology. Water Research Laboratory PhD student Aigars Lavrinovičs also take part in summer school. We thank Varis Ādamsons, Sandra Vasiļevska and Ivars Bērziņš for support, great technical work, active participation and opportunity to visit water and wastewater treatment utilities.

Attended the NOAH project partner consortium meeting in Tallinn

From 14th to 15th August senior researchers Jānis Rubulis from WRL and Arnis Lektauers from the Department of Modeling and Simulation of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology attended the NOAH project partner consortium meeting in Tallinn. The NOAH team is focused on the extreme weather layer creation on the top of the general urban plan that will be used by city planners to derive specific measures for each planning in order to minimize the impact of the flood. The NOAH team is in competition with other 32 project ideas at http://centralbaltic.eu/content/funding-decisions.

In the NOAH consortium, there are 6 cities (Pori, Haapsalu, Rakvere, Liepaja, Jurmala and Ogre) and 3 academies (Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Riga Technical University (RTU) and as a leader is Tallinn University of Technology). The RTU team also includes experts from the Department of Geomatics and cooperates with the Latvian State Enterprise «Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center».

Participated in the Latvian Radio program «Zināmais nezināmajā»

On 5th of July, Talis Juhna participated in the Latvian Radio program «Zināmais nezināmajā», where he talked about experimental water treatment plant. In program participated also Denise Delvalle de Borrero, a researcher from the Panama University of Technology, and she talked about water quality and micro-plastic particles in the water.

On 16th of June in the WRL premises visited prominent guests Jean-Claude Block from France, Frederik Hammes from Switzerland and Illka Miettinen from Finland. The visitors had the hot topic presentation in the seminar devoted to drinking water biostability.
